Build your wealth. Optimize your life.

The classic "skip the latte and you'll be a millionaire" argument is annoying because it frames coffee as a moral failing. We don't think it is. A $7 cup that genuinely makes your morning better might be the highest ROI $7 in your life.

The actual question is: does this habit, at this frequency, at this price, feel worth what it costs me in freedom years?

That's the question this calculator answers — and it's the same question PeakWorth™ answers for every other money decision in your life. House. Job. Kids. Retirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is giving up coffee really going to make me rich?

No — and that's not the point. The point is that small recurring habits compound massively over decades. A $7 daily coffee invested instead at 7% becomes ~$280,000 by retirement. The exercise isn't 'never enjoy coffee' — it's 'know what each habit actually costs you in years of freedom, then choose on purpose.'

Why 7% returns?

7% is the long-run REAL (inflation-adjusted) return of the U.S. stock market — roughly 10% nominal minus 3% inflation. We use a real rate AND keep your habit cost flat in today's dollars, so the future-value number is also in today's dollars (apples-to-apples with the $7 coffee you'd give up). Some calculators use 10% nominal without deflating — that overstates real purchasing power.

Where does 'years of freedom' come from?

It's the future value divided by $50,000 of annual expenses. Using the 4% safe withdrawal rule, $50k/yr requires a $1.25M portfolio. Every dollar of future value buys you fractional time at that lifestyle. Adjust the assumption with your own numbers in PeakWorth Quick Start.

What if I make my own coffee at home for $0.50 instead?

That's the easiest 'arbitrage' in personal finance — and exactly the kind of trade-off PeakWorth helps you see. Home brew + one café visit per week costs ~90% less and shifts the same dollars into your FI bucket. The calculator above lets you model exactly that.

Does PeakWorth track every cup?

No, and you don't need it to. PeakWorth models your full financial life — income, expenses, investments, debt, taxes, two earners — and shows your live FI Age. You bucket coffee into 'lifestyle spending', tune the slider, and see your FI Age move in real time. No transaction-level tracking required.
