How to read your income percentile
A percentile tells you how many U.S. earners fall below your income. The 75th percentile means you out-earn 75% of people. The median (50th) is the household exactly in the middle — the most useful single comparison number.
Two views matter, for different reasons. Comparing against your age bracket tells you whether your earnings curve is on track. A $90K income at age 28 is a top-quartile result; the same $90K at age 55 is below median for that bracket. Comparing against the full distribution tells you your absolute position in the country.
Income is not wealth. A high income with a high spend rate doesn't build financial independence — your savings rate does. Pair this calculator with our net worth calculator to see the full picture.
