Why savings rate beats income

If you save 10% of a $200K income, you're 90% dependent on that paycheck and FI is ~50 years away. If you save 50% of a $80K income, you only need to replace half your spending and FI is ~17 years away. The lower spender wins — by decades.

Mr. Money Mustache's famous chart maps it cleanly: at 10% savings, work 51 years. At 25%, 32 years. At 50%, 17 years. At 75%, 7 years.

How to calculate your real savings rate

Take all money saved or invested in a year (401k contributions including match, IRA, taxable brokerage, HSA, extra mortgage principal) and divide by gross income. Some purists divide by post-tax income; either is fine as long as you're consistent.

Don't include emergency-fund contributions you'll spend within a year, or 'savings' for short-term goals like a vacation.

A calculator alone tells you the payment. PeakWorth tells you what that payment costs your retirement — and how every change ripples through the next 30 years of your finances.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 50/30/20 rule good?

It's a good floor — 20% to savings/debt payoff is the absolute minimum to retire on time. For early retirement, target 35%+.

Does employer 401k match count?

Yes. It's part of your savings rate because it's compensation that gets invested for you. Always capture the full match.

Should I count mortgage principal as savings?

The principal portion of your mortgage payment builds equity, which is a form of savings. Interest, taxes, and insurance are pure expenses.
