How net worth is calculated

Net worth = total assets − total liabilities. It's the cleanest single number for your financial position because it captures everything: cash, investments, real estate, and every debt you owe. Income is a flow; net worth is the score.

Use current market values, not what you paid. Your house is worth what it would sell for today. Your 401(k) is whatever the statement says this month. Cars depreciate — use Kelley Blue Book, not the loan balance.

Track it over time, not in one snapshot. A single net worth number tells you almost nothing. The slope — how it changes month over month — tells you everything about your financial trajectory.
